We are looking for designers (industrial / graphic / urban / automotive / etc.), architects, makers, engineers (mechanical / transport / civil / urban / automotive / architectural / energy / robotic / mechatronic / computer / electromechanic / electronic / electric / etc.), and other innovative and creative citizens in order to build up all together the next generation of public transport.

Context

After the success of the first four (4) editions of the Y4PT Global Transport Hackathon series in Montreal 2017 (Canada), Dubai 2018 (United Arab Emirates), Stockholm 2019 (Sweden) and Barcelona (2023), the Youth For Public Transport (Y4PT) Foundation, with the support of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), its members and other stakeholders, and following the long-standing tradition of Y4PT Youth Lab series, is promoting the organization of local transport hackathons around the world during the 2024-2025 season, by combining the best of boundless human creativity in collaborative environments, with the aim of advancing transport sector towards sustainability.

A wide range of current and critical challenges faced by the transport sector as a whole will be addressed during the National Transport Hackathon Egypt 2025, with public transport as the cornerstone of multimodal mobility solutions, in line with a holistic point of view on sustainable transport.

Incentives

  • One (1) person, selected autonomously by the own team, member of the 1st Place Winning Project of the National Transport Hackathon Egypt 2025, will travel to Hamburg (Germany, Europe), courtesy of Y4PT, to participate in the Global Transport Hackathon 2025, in the framework of the UITP Global Public Transport Summit.
  • The winning project and other selected teams will be visible on social networks and websites of the hackathon partners.
  • All participants will receive a certificate of participation.

How can I participate?

  • Participants must be of legal age according to the Egyptian law (they must prove this on the first day of the hackathon, during registration, by showing a valid photo-based identification document).
  • Up to five (5) members per team.
  • Participants can be students, young professionals, startups, etc. who demonstrate their commitment, creativity and enthusiasm for sustainable mobility in their project proposal.
  • Participants must bring and use their own work tools such as laptops, electronic components, notebooks, pens, models, personal care items, etc. Hackathon partners will only provide free WiFi Internet access, electric power connection, tables, chairs, auditorium service (audiovisual resources for presentation in plenary session), toilet service and food (catering).

Venue: To be confirmed at the campus of the Ain Shams University (Cairo, Egypt, North Africa).

Day 1: Friday XX February 2025

  • 08:00 – 09:00: Arrival and registration of participants; Welcome breakfast.
  • 09:00 – 09:10: Opening speech by the Minister of Transport of Egypt (to be confirmed).
  • 09:10 – 09:20: Presentation on the Global Transport Hackathon Hamburg 2025.
  • 09:20 – 10:20: Presentation on transport challenges (introduction, problems, available information, possible solutions, etc.).
  • 10:20 – 10:40: Presentation on the National Transport Hackathon Egypt 2025 (agenda, methodology, evaluation criteria, business canvas, incentives, mentors, etc.).
  • 10:40 – 12:30: Plenary session: Getting to know all the participants and their project ideas: “elevator pitch” (1 minute per participant) + Team building + Beginning of teamwork with the guidance of all the mentors.
  • 12:30 – 13:30: Lunch
  • 14:00 – 18:00: Group session: All teams start working on their projects with the guidance of the mentors.
  • 18:00 – 19:00: Group session: 1st check-point (feedback) with all mentors: “What is your project missing so far?” / One team at a time while the others keep working on their projects.
  • 19:00 – 20:00: Dinner
  • 20:00 – 23:59: Group session: All teams keep working on their projects with the guidance of the mentors.

Day 2: Saturday XX February 2025

  • 00:00 – 08:00: Group session: All teams keep working on their projects with the guidance of the mentors.
  • 08:00 – 09:00: Breakfast.
  • 09:00 – 10:00: Group session: 2nd check-point (feedback) with all mentors: “What is your project missing so far?” / One team at a time while the others keep working on their projects.
  • 10:00 – 12:30: Group session: All teams keep working on their projects with the guidance of the mentors.
  • 12:30 – 13:30: Lunch
  • 14:00 – 18:00: Group session: All teams keep working on their projects with the guidance of the mentors.
  • 18:00 – 19:00: Group session: 3rd check-point (feedback) with all mentors: “What is your project missing so far?” / One team at a time while the others keep working on their projects.
  • 19:00 – 20:00: Dinner
  • 20:00 – 23:59: Group session: All teams keep working on their projects with the guidance of the mentors.

Day 3: Sunday XX February 2025

  • 00:00 – 08:00: Group session: All teams keep working on their projects with the guidance of the mentors.
  • 08:00 – 09:00: Breakfast.
  • 09:00 – 10:00: Group session: 4th and final check-point (feedback) with all mentors: “What is your project missing so far?” / One team at a time while the others keep working on their projects.
  • 10:00 – 12:30: Group session: All teams continue working on their projects with the guidance of the mentors.
  • 12:30 – 13:30: Lunch
  • 14:00 – 16:00: Group session: All teams keep working on their projects with the guidance of the mentors.
  • 16:00 – 18:00: Plenary session: Final pitch in front of the jury panel (5-minute pitch per team + 5 minutes for questions and answers) / Deliberation / Announcement of the winner of the National Transport Hackathon Egypt 2025.
  • 18:00: End of the National Transport Hackathon Egypt 2025
